A lot of this film really happened. And much of its joyful slapstick is the brainchild of writer/director David O. Russell that curiously moves nowhere fast as we jump through history, intrigue and romanticism of the 1930s. As characters zip through the action on their way to solve what is, perhaps, the world’s greatest international conspiracy of epic proportion.
Just as with Russell’s previous films such as Silver Linings Playbook, Joy and American Hustle, his masterful screwball style is all over Amsterdam and compels the audience to share in his wonder for the madcap mystery genre and look a little deeper into some of the things that makes us human. Sadness, humor, suffering, addiction, deceit, rhapsody, creativity and camaraderie in what may otherwise be seen as the direst of times.
