If there is one director I trust to bring literary works to the big screen, it is Kenneth Branagh. His dramatic, sweeping films are epic to say the least and he often finds inspiration in classical works. This time, Branagh gives the best-selling young adult book Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer, a dash of Disney magic and a cinema-sized experience for audiences of all ages to experience for the first time on Disney+ in the comfort of their homes beginning June 12, 2020.
Similar to Branagh’s earlier works, Artemis Fowl delivers a fantastical epic adventure, resplendent with beautiful landscapes and spectacular visual effects that will transport viewers to wondrous new worlds. Artemis Fowl stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the title role alongside Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel and Adrian Scarborough, with Colin Farrell and Judi Dench. Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl wrote the screenplay.
Disney’s Artemis Fowl is a spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he desperately tries to save his father who has been kidnapped. In order to pay his ransom, Artemis must infiltrate an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies—and bring the kidnapper the Aculos, the fairies’ most powerful and coveted magical device. To locate the elusive object, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.
Branagh said, “Artemis Fowl is a true original. In challenging times, a twelve year old criminal mastermind is one heck of a traveling companion. Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem. His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney +.”
Many thanks to Walt Disney Studios for adding films to Disney+ ahead of their original streaming release date during safer-at-home orders! What film are you most excited about on Disney+ this year?
