I have a special place in my heart for Nickelodeon’s OG show, Blue’s Clues. When my nephews were little this was on of their go-to shows and I become well acquainted with the clever pup Blue and her friends. Blue’s Clues was one of the first preschool shows to incorporate American Sign Language and its innovative, colorful design made it an instant hit. Hosts Steve (Steve Burns) and Joe (Donovan Patton) were effervescent and their excitement palpable with each song and dance.
Jump forward and now I am a mom with a preschooler and a toddler of my own and Blue is back with a brand new show, Blue’s Clues & You! with host Josh Dela Cruz now on DVD exclusively at Walmart.
All the things I love about Blue’s Clues are back in Blue’s Clues & You! including some pretty fantastic cameos. What makes this show stand out even more is the casting of Josh, a Filipino-American and quite possibly the first Asian-American host for a preschool show in the USA. Why do I think this is important? It’s just one step closer to a more rounded representation of our population. If you didn’t know, I am first generation Filipina-American, also an actress, with two mixed daughters. Growing up, Asians on the screen were generally caricaturized and I struggled to find role models within the entertainment industry. Early on, I had to come to grips with the fact that I might never be cast in a Jane Austen film or even be considered for a lead role. That has only slightly shifted. I am beyond happy that my daughters can see someone on screen that looks like he could be family. Because we are probably cousins, after all. But more than that, it’s because diversity and inclusion matters. But that’s a whole other blog post!
Anyway…
In the Blue’s Clues & You! DVD collection, fans can help Josh solve games of Blue’s Clues as he tries to figure out what Blue wants for a snack, what percent she wants for her birthday, what she would like to do on her play date and more. The DVD will also include special episodes from Josh & Blue’s VLOG and eight bonus ASL flash cards.
