One of our favorite family films of 2021 was Clifford The Big Red Dog, released just before Thanksgiving, based on the “Clifford” children’s book series from author Norman Bridwell. On February 1st, this heartwarming film will be available to purchase on Blu-Ray and DVD.
Middle school student Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp) struggles to fit in at school and thanks to a magical encounter with the mysterious Mr. Bridwell (John Cleese), Emily discovers a puppy as unique as she. But when her little red puppy named Clifford has grown ten feet overnight, she turns to her eccentric Uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) for help. Clifford’s distinctive size and color attracts the attention of a mad scientist, geneticist Tieran (Tony Hale), who tries to capture the larger-than-life playful pup in an effort to end world hunger. It takes the entire neighborhood to hide Clifford as Emily and her friends race across New York City to save the pup from those who wish to exploit his gifts. Despite the mayhem, Clifford helps teach Emily self-acceptance, unconditional love and finding courage from within.
It is a rare accomplishment to have a film adaptation be just as good as a book. Even more so to have a film exceeded expectations of such a beloved childhood story and this version of Clifford is just that. The film, directed by Walt Becker along with Jay Scherick’s screenplay, explores the adjustments and challenges that Emily and her family had to go through with such a big dog and, most importantly, bring out the most important sentiments of the “Clifford” books so beautifully: love and courage.
When Clifford first enters Emily’s life she is told that Clifford will grow depending “on how much you’ll love him.” And later she finds enough courage to stand up to bullies and bad guys saying, “If we could just love each other like this, we would never have to feel small again.” Even though Emily found a big friend, she found the power within herself to speak up and overcome her enemies with truth, compassion and love.
