As the first scripted show on Disney+ not based on pre-existing material, Diary Of A Future President has a lot of expectations to live up to after the success of The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Series. The show is set to debut January 17th but the girls and I were given Presidential treatment at the blue carpet world premiere where we were invited to view a screening of first two episodes.

While we were waiting, we spoke briefly with Hollywood legend and advocate Edward James Olmos who was so gracious with Olivia. He admired her Elsa dress and let her know how special she is. Diary Of A Future President was made for her: to empower the current generation of future leaders.

The series begins on President Cañero-Reed’s (Gina Rodriguez) first day in office. Upon receiving a surprise package from her mother, we are transported back to her middle school days. Told using the narration of 12-year-old Cuban American girl (Tess Romero) Elena’s diary, this new family comedy follows her journey through the ups and downs of middle school, which set her on the path to becoming the president of the United States. The show also stars Charles Bushnell (playing Bobby Cañero-Reed), Selenis Leyva (playing Gabi Cañero-Reed), Michael Weaver (playing Sam).

At first glance, Diary Of A Future President looks like a teeny bopper girl power series. While that sentiment is there, the writing is smart enough for adults to appreciate and perhaps reminisce on their own middle school experience. Tess Romero and Selenis Leyva are wonderful together as daughter and mother with emotions that run the gamut. This will especially resonate with families that have children in those formative years. Young men in the audience are not overlooked. Elena’s older brother, Bobby, is very much a part of her storyline and full of high school shenanigans.  These characters are relatable, empathetic and their situations remind me of myself or someone I know making for some good, clean comedy!

Diary of a Future President was inspired by creator Ilana Peña’s (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) childhood and is produced by Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin). Series premieres January 17th on Disney+.
