If you didn’t already know (and why would you, really) 13 is my lucky number. Could have something to do with me being born on the 13th and that the number keeps popping up in random places all the time! Being that we are now in 2013, it only bodes well.
This lucky year began with a trip back to Colorado Springs for another choreography job with Academy of Children’s Theatre. Our Spring musical was none other than You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. I was blessed to be back with my friend and colleague, director Allyson Paris and a marvelously talented cast.
In the span of 9 days, they managed to learn all of the choreography I threw at them! The true test will be over the next few weeks as rehearsals progress without me. The show features baby Woodstocks, dancing blankets, the occasional kick line, with beloved classic (and some slightly obscure) characters. I am especially proud of the Blanket’s dance break and think it well worth your time and travel for that one number!
The biggest obstacle was a pesky little flu virus. The silly little carrier children were such dedicated theatricians and insisted to their parents that they attend rehearsal so they would not fall behind. Little did any of the creative staff know what was coming! By Day 7, at least half of the cast had been taken out, leaving the rest of us cringing and bathing in sanitizer. Much to our dismay, we ended up canceling ONE rehearsal, giving everyone a chance to recoup. This became latte, sightseeing and movie day for Allyson and I!
And somehow, all of the kids survived and mastered the dance numbers. They are truly some of the hardest working artists I know!
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown has 4 public performances on April 18th and 20th in Colorado Springs, CO. Visit ACT’s website for showtimes & tickets.
