The combination of film & food is what I’m all about. This Halloween, Fat Sal’s Deli resurrects its seasonal pop-up, McDowell’s from the 1988 Eddie Murphy film Coming To America. You, too, can experience the Golden Arcs and discover some tasty treats that only come around once a year! This is an extra special year, as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of the film’s release! I was invited to Fat Sal’s Hollywood for a little taste of what’s to come.
The Big Mick
Seedless buns and all, The Big Mick is served up as promised with two beef patties, special sauce, cheese, lettuce & pickles – hero style. The addition of French fries within the sandwich is brilliant and could make for the prefect combo if you don’t want to take the time for separate bites. But what is a burger without a side of fries?
Zamunda Fries
Leave it to Fat Sal’s to be anything but basic. These fries could be a meal by themselves! These fries are loaded with seasoned chicken, cheese, roasted red bell pepper & onions and drizzled in a spicy aioli sauce. Good luck eating them with your fingers! Named after Prince Akeem’s (Eddie Murphy) kingdom, Zamunda, they are seriously tasty and strangely satisfying.
Sexual Chocolate Shake
No burger experience is complete without the (absolutely necessary) milkshake. Again putting their own spin on the classic shake, Fat Sal’s calls on its source material for inspiration: Randy Watson’s Sexual Chocolate band. And it is truly #dessertporn worthy. Blue Bunny Ice Cream serves as a perfect base for the shake, rimmed with fudge sauce & sprinkles, topped with a generous slice of thick and creamy chocolate cake, whipped cream, Hershey’s kisses and a cherry on top. You’ll always remember your first one.
Next door, Fat Sal’s has transformed the empty space into a replica of the Barbershop for your Insta feed. They were still adding the details when I arrived and it certainly looks promising! While you’re waiting for a seat, take a load off in one of the barber’s chairs to discuss some of the finer things in life and pick up a t-shirt or hat to commemorate the occasion.
The McDowell’s pop-up begins Sunday, October 28th and runs through Halloween. Film fans and food lovers are sure to appreciate these special menu additions, whether or not you have seen the movie. But for added appreciation, I highly suggest refreshing your Prince Akeem movie viewing!
Did you guys see Eddie Murphy on SNL? He was on there with Jimmy Fallon. It’s great to see Eddie Muphy return after his new movie, Dolemite Is My Name.
