I love it when classic stories get new life from a fresh perspective. In this new action-packed film, Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs from Lionsgate, writer/director SungHo Hong puts his own magical spin on the Snow White fable. This outrageous fairy tale spoof starts as Snow White steals a pair of red shoes that transform her into a beautiful princess. Meanwhile, a witch’s curse turn seven brave princes into dwarfs, forcing them to seek out the princess, hoping for a kiss to break their spell. Together, they must face Snow White’s wicked stepmother – who will stop at nothing to get her precious shoes back – and, along the way, learn that true beauty lies within!

The initial exposition seemed a little intense for my 4-year old, but she insisted it was not scary and laughed at quite a bit of the film. It’s always fun to watch kids attempt to interact with movies (especially animated ones) with the occasional “watch out!” or “look over there!” and I could tell that she really enjoyed the magic within the film.
I especially loved the message of how to be comfortable in your own skin….and that a good pair of shoes can help you find your confidence. There are many great messages for kids about body positivity from the princess and dwarfs, being true to yourself and how powerful friends are together. Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs received the Dove Seal of Approval for All Ages partly in thanks to its emphasis on how beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. This film is rated PG and is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, On Demand in homes and castles far, far away.
