Staying in for Halloween? If you are up for a spooky film without a lot of gore or jump scares, consider Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, now available on Digital home entertainment. The hardcopy DVD/Blu-Ray/4K Ultra HD combo packs are available starting November 5th. Thank you to Lionsgate who sent me a copy of the film for free to review, but the opinions are my own.
Loosely based on the children’s book series of the same title by Alvin Schwartz, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is set in 1968 Pennsylvania where for generations the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time. For a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home, the stories become all too real in this spine-tingling film.
Produced by Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro and directed by André Øvredal, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is meant for younger viewing audiences with plenty of creepy (albeit somewhat predictable) situations and convenient “oh, I know what that is” moments. It lacks the nostalgia of Stranger Things yet draws some similarities to Stanley Kibrick’s The Shining…but for 10-15 year-olds. Check out the trailer below!
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is rated PG-13 for terror/violence, disturbing images and language including racial epithets. It is available to watch digitally now….as in Halloween night….my favorite way to manage my digital collection is through Movies Anywhere in case you are just starting out.
