Just in time for spooky season, we were treated to an advance screening of the next episode of Disney Channel’s latest animated series, The Ghost and Molly McGee. It’s only on its sixth episode but has already been renewed for Season Two! The Ghost and Molly McGee is one of those special shows that brings bite-sized lessons smothered in fun.
Molly McGee is an exuberant Thai-American teenager who is cursed by Scratch, a ghost, when she brings him back to the land of the living. The curse backfires and Scratch is forever bound to Molly – to go where she goes and do what she does.
While Molly is a do-gooder optimist, Scratch’s sole purpose is to spread chaos. Perhaps they are each other’s missing piece? The balance of the world’s natural energy? The beautiful friendship that emerges between the two is wrought with challenges, not necessarily solely from each other but ones derived from the real world. Ones that 13-year olds are actually dealing with (sans ghost). A bit of supernatural humor might actually be exactly when teenagers and pre-teens need while they decompress.
This season, we can look forward to guest voice appearances by Jenifer Lewis (ABC’s “black-ish”), Danny Trejo (“Machete”), Aparna Nancherla (“Corporate”), Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”), Patton Oswalt (“Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.”), D’Arcy Carden (“The Good Place”), Thomas Lennon (“Reno 911!”), Jessica Keenan Wynn (“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”) and Sean Giambrone (ABC’s “The Goldbergs”).
After the screening, we sat in with voice actors Ashly Burch (Molly) and Dana Snyder (Scratch) and listen to them express their love of the show. Funny enough, Ashly accidentally found herself as the voice of Molly. She was originally brought into the series as a consultant to two male writers who had no life experience as a 13-year old girl, so they needed an insider’s perspective. They loved Ashley so much that she landed the role of Molly – they even tailored the role to her experiences as a Thai-American, bring even more representation to the screen. As half Filipina, I remember watching TV and movies as a child and looking for people that looked like me. The Asian characters that were on screen were either highly stereotypical tropes or very minor characters. Now with two daughters of my own, having more and more specifically mixed Asian characters is so wonderfully empowering for their future and the future of entertainment.
Character designer Karl Cruz joined us for few minutes and walked us through a step-by-step tutorial of Scratch, which was a lot of fun! We had a great time stretching our artistic muscles and watching Karl’s vision come to life in front of us!
Part musical adventure, part thriller and all Disney magic, The Ghost and Molly McGee is a silly yet satisfying comedy. The show airs Saturdays on Disney Channel. Disney+ subscribers can also stream the first five episodes.
Many thanks to Disney Channel and Kristin Cruz for introducing us to The Ghost and Molly McGee. We enjoyed special treats from Lolli & Pops, chocolate chip cookie mix from Terra Americana and Charms Spider Web Fluffy Stuff to keep the spooky vibe going.
Boo to you this Halloween!
